Abel’s diverse background makes him uniquely qualified to establish a wide range of programs useful for injury rehabilitation and prevention. Abel guided me through a routine of strengthening and stretching that enabled me to fully recover from a hip replacement and then again from surgery to repair a torn tendon in my elbow. Unlike other therapists I have been to, Abel not only focuses on the content of the exercise program is but also on how it is executed. Abel helped me recover from 2 arthroscopic hip surgeries, which were a long time coming as I did ballet and other forms of dance all my life. Abel’s approach is so personal- he observed how I stood and how I walked. He took me through rehab-ing the joint —from heel slides to squats— and then addressed the over-engaged and under-engaged muscles that led to my injury in the first place. Abel’s practice is as anatomically-detailed as you are willing to go. At the same time, his care inspired a bodily awareness that has played a huge part in my overall health.

The first time I met with Abel, he realized that in addition to my foot having little flexibility, my gait was asymmetrical: I was swinging one hip forward, to make up for the lack of flexibility overall. My gait affected the movement of my knees and hips, all of which had become stiff and achy over the years. I am very physically active and had resigned myself to being in some level of pain as part of aging.

Abel put together a program to help me re-train my gait and build up muscle and flexibility where needed. I am aware of how I should move, vs. the habits I’d developed. I am so pleased with the results — my foot is flexible and strong, and I no longer have knee and/or hip pain. I am so happy to be running and hiking again, things I thought I might be past.
